چکیده

Introduction: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques can be useful in the pre-surgical mapping of eloquent brain tissue. Previous studies have shown that perfusion-based Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) methods produce results with better spatial specificity than the most commonly used Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) contrast [1]. These studies have focused on the relative location of the activation areas with regard to proximal draining veins, showing a bias for the BOLD signal to be shifted towards the venous compartment relative to the ASL contrast. In this study, we aimed to compare the localization of the hand motor area obtained by simultaneous ASL-BOLD fMRI and standard BOLD fMRI with well established anatomical landmarks [2].

Discrepancies between BOLD and flow dynamics in primary and supplementary motor areas: application of the balloon model to the interpretation of BOLD transients.

The blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal measured in the brain with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during an activation experiment often exhibits pronounced transients at the beginning and end of the stimulus. Such transients could be a reflection of transients in the underlying neural activity, or they could result from transients in cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral meta...

Detecting neural activity and connectivity by perfusion-based fMRI

This study proposes an approach to estimate the functional localization and connectivity from CBF and BOLD signals simultaneously measured by ASL (arterial spin labeling) MRI, especially using exploratory Structural Equation Modeling analysis. In a visual task experiment, the primary visual cortices were located by analyzing the perfusion data. In the resting state experiment, two structural eq...

Arterial spin labeling perfusion fMRI with very low task frequency.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become the most widely used modality for visualizing regional brain activation in response to sensorimotor or cognitive tasks. While the majority of fMRI studies have used blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast as a marker for neural activation, baseline drift effects result in poor sensitivity for detecting slow variations in neural a...

Preoperative Sensorimotor Mapping in Brain Tumor Patients using Spontaneous Fluctuations in Neuronal Activity Imaged with fMRI: Initial Experience

Objective—To describe initial experience with resting state correlation mapping as a potential aid for presurgical planning of brain tumor resections. Methods/Technique—Resting state blood oxygenation dependent (BOLD) fMRI was acquired in seventeen healthy young adults and four patients with brain tumors invading sensorimotor cortex. Conventional fMRI motor mapping (finger tapping protocol) was...

Multiband multi-echo simultaneous ASL/BOLD for task-induced functional MRI

Typical simultaneous blood oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) and arterial spin labeling (ASL) sequences acquire two echoes, one perfusion-sensitive and one BOLD-sensitive. However, for ASL, spatial resolution and brain coverage are limited due to the T1 decay of the labeled blood. This study applies a sequence combining a multiband acquisition with four echoes for simultaneous BOLD and pseudo-...
